NC Stream Reports

STONE MOUNTAIN AND
THE MITCHELL RIVER

Stockings have pretty much ended until March 2012. Water levels are in good shape and the reports have been great. With colder overnight temps the fishing has been better late morning into the afternoon. Here are some flies that will work: Blue Winged Olives (14-18), Elk Hair Caddis (14-16),black and olive midges(20), Adams (14-16), Sprout Baetis Emerger (16-18), Pheasant Tails (16-18), Copper Johns in red and copper (14-18), Prince Nymphs (14-16), Red Ass Soft Hackle (16), Y2K’s, Black and red zebra midges (18-20) and Wooly Buggers in black, olive and brown.

HELTON CREEK

March 2012 will be the next scheduled month for a stocking. Many of the patterns that are listed for Stone Mountain and the Mitchell will work on Helton as well. Add some Tellico Nymphs (14-16), Jimmy Legs Stone (6), psycho prince (14-16)  zonkers in olive and white. Going small this time of year is critical if you want to catch fish. Using a double nymph rig can increase your chances by using a big bright fly as the point fly and dropping a small zebra midge or rainbow warrior of that.

WILSON CREEK

The same regulations and patterns with the above listed streams.

ARARAT RIVER (Mt. AIRY)

A new addition to the delayed harvest system just outside Mt. Airy. 3,600 browns, brooks and rainbows were stocked in October and November. Water levels are good right now and the fishing there has been stellar. Your typical delayed harvest patterns will work such as: Y2K’s, prince nymphs (16), hare’s ear (16-18), copper john in red (14-16), egg patterns, wooly buggers, micro mayflies (16-18). On warmer days you might get some top water activity on henryville specials (14-16), black midges (18), BWO’s (16-18) and Adams (16-18)
